At Caring and Sharing Rochdale (CAS), we believe in the power of friendship, support, and community. That’s why we created Friends of Shamwari, a monthly social event designed to bring together asylum seekers, refugees, and members of the wider community in a welcoming and supportive environment.

What is Friends of Shamwari?

“Shamwari” means “friend” in the Shona language, a word that beautifully reflects the spirit of this initiative. The project is a lifeline for asylum-seeking and refugee families who often face isolation, uncertainty, and hardship upon arriving in the UK. Every first Saturday of the month, we host a free community gathering, offering a warm, friendly space for individuals and families to connect, share experiences, and build relationships.

What We Offer

  • Social Connection: A chance to meet others, make friends, and feel part of a community.
  • Fun for Families: Engaging activities for children, including games, storytelling, and creative workshops.
  • Essential Support: Free food parcels for attendees, ensuring families leave with something to help them through the week.
  • Celebration of Cultures: Sharing traditions, music, and stories from different backgrounds to promote understanding and unity.
  • Safe Space: A welcoming environment where people can feel heard, supported, and valued.

Why Friends of Shamwari Matters

For many asylum seekers and refugees, loneliness and social exclusion are everyday realities. Friends of Shamwari is more than just an event, it’s a space where people find hope, companionship, and a sense of belonging. The children look forward to the activities, while parents appreciate the opportunity to relax and connect with others facing similar challenges.

By creating this supportive network, we are reducing isolation, promoting well-being, and fostering community integration in Rochdale.
