Friends of Shamwari – Our Social Event for Refugees and Asylum Seekers

On the first Saturday of every month, Caring and Sharing Rochdale hosts an event that is much more than a social gathering. Through this avenue, like every other session, workshop and event, we create spaces of joy, connection, and support —especially for those who have been uprooted from their homes and find themselves navigating new and unfamiliar environments.

Warmly, we introduce to you, Friends of Shamwari, a heartwarming monthly event designed specifically for refugees and asylum seekers in our community. Held at St Andrew’s Church in Rochdale by 1:30 pm, Friends of Shamwari brings together families for an afternoon where laughter is shared, friendships are formed, and a sense of belonging flourishes.

From the moment you step through the doors of St Andrew’s Church, you’re met with the inviting aroma of hot food, the sound of children’s laughter, and the comforting buzz of conversations among parents. The atmosphere is intentionally warm and welcoming, a reflection of the community spirit that Caring and Sharing Rochdale strives to nurture.

For parents, this gathering is a rare opportunity to relax and connect with others who share similar experiences. Over a meal, they exchange stories, offer support, and build a network of friends who understand the unique challenges of resettling in a new country. The sense of camaraderie is palpable, as everyone is united by a common thread—a desire to create a better future for their families.

While the parents connect, the children are in their own little wonderland, engaged in a variety of games and activities that not only entertain but also foster new friendships. Whether they are playing outdoor games, or simply running around with newfound friends, the joy on their faces is unmistakable. It’s a space where they can be children again, where the worries of the world are momentarily forgotten, and the only focus is fun and play.

Each month, Friends of Shamwari adds a sprinkle of extra excitement with a raffle draw and other interactive games. These moments of lighthearted fun are eagerly anticipated by all, as they offer a chance to win small prizes and add to the overall joy of the day. But more than the prizes, it’s the shared laughter and collective celebration that make these moments so special.

Friends of Shamwari is more than just a monthly event—it’s a testament to the power of community. It’s a reminder that no one is alone, that in times of need, there are spaces filled with warmth, understanding, and support. For the refugees and asylum seekers who attend, it’s a beacon of hope, a place where they can find solace and strength in the company of others.

As we continue to host these gatherings, we invite more families to join us. Whether you are a refugee, asylum seeker, or simply someone looking to lend a hand, Friends of Shamwari welcomes you with open arms. Together, we can build a community where everyone feels valued, supported, and truly at home.
